This website was initially developed in 2011 and was given a major makeover in early 2017, with the generous support of the Danish Association of the Blind. It utilises the well-known WordPress content management system. WordPress sets a very high standard of accessibility for blind and low vision people, but we have made minor modifications to it to make it even better. The current developer of this website is blind himself and relies on WordPress being fully accessible. Right now the website is known to work well using the latest versions of the Firefox and Chrome browsers with the NVDA and JAWS screen readers, and also using the Safari iPhone browser with the VoiceOver screen reader.
The main links for moving to different sections are at the top of each page. If you are using a device with a relatively small screen or window size, you may instead find a button that says “show menu”. Just activate this button in your usual way and the links should appear. This approach is becoming more common on today’s websites, because it means that the main navigation links don’t always have to take up a lot of space on a small screen or window. You can just start reading the content and bring up the navigation links when you need them.
On every page, the first heading is the start of the main content. So if you are using JAWS or NVDA, and for most other screen readers, simply going to the top of the page and pressing h will take you to the start of the main content for that page. In fact the h key is useful because it will also take you to the start of any other articles like news items that may be on the page. Or if you are using Safari on an iPhone or similar touch screen, then use the rotor to switch to headings, and a simple swipe down will take you to each heading on the page.
Most of the information on this website is in the form of news articles that relate to one of our country members or one of the main activities of our work. Each time we add new content, it will usually appear at the top of its page. Usually when you read a page, you will see the relevant news articles in short form listed one after another with the most recent ones first. Just activate the heading link or the “read more” link to read the article in full.
Any articles we add will also appear in short form on the home page. So if you visit the website from time to time, just browse the home page to see what has been added since your last visit.
You can also be notified automatically when we add new items. One way is to subscribe to receive updates by email. Each time we add something, you will receive an email message right in your inbox. Another way to easily know when we put something new on the website is to use the RSS feed. You can do this directly in your browser or your favourite news reader if you use one. Just set it up in the way that suits you and you will always know what we are up to.
When you read an article in full, you will find at the end some fields you can fill in to leave a comment. Please feel free to comment on any article you find interesting or to share something you think others might like to know that relates to the article you just read. All comments are moderated, which means someone will check them first before they are published. So your comment might not appear straightaway. We are aware that commenting has been part of this website since it started, but unfortunately it seems nobody was reading and approving them. That was an oversight on our part and we sincerely apologise if you left a comment that was important to you and it was never published.
After some user feedback, we have added a sharing button to make it easier for you to share our information through social networking sites like Facebook. WBUAP does not run its own page on Facebook or other sites, so there isn’t a button to “follow” us on a social networking site. However you will find a single “share this” button near the bottom of each page. When you activate that button, sharing links will appear for Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and Linkedin. You can use these links to share our information with your friends and colleagues, provided you have your own account on any of these services.
Despite our best efforts, with the variety of devices in use nowadays, it is not uncommon for some people to find things don’t work as expected. If you are having difficulties using the website then we would like to hear from you. You will find a link to email the website administrator at the foot of each page. Please use it to email us with the details of your problem, and please remember to also describe what equipment you are using.
You can also use this link if you have a news item or information you think blind people would be interested in and which you would like us to publish.
